In 1805, Ryoukan took residence in Gogoan at age 48.
Since the days of old, the way of the hermit runs like a river through Japanese culture.
This room was inspired by Gogoan.
The airy, unfinished ceiling states its stubborn distaste for extravagance.
The white jyuraku walls and the koshibari papering of the fusuma sliding partition walls lend distinction to the simple tatami, without borders.
The entrance displays a work by an avant grade calligrapher from Kyoto, who strongly states his spirit of challenge to master calligrapher Ryoukan in the single character kaze, or wind. As it welcomes its guests, Kaze awaits patiently to age well with time.
